Attorney Profile

William & Mary School of Law, J.D. Order of the Coif

Claremont McKenna College, B.A. Magna Cum Laude

Thomas E. Robertson graduated in 2008 from William & Mary School of Law, where he was awarded Order of the Coif (highest academic achievement) and Order of Barrister (highest award for oral advocacy). During law school, Mr. Robertson volunteered or worked for the following organizations:

  • United States Department of Justice, Antitrust Division
  • Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP (national law firm), Litigation Section
  • Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project

Upon graduating from law school, Mr. Robertson served as law clerk to the Honorable Tommy E. Miller, U.S. Magistrate Judge (Eastern District of Virginia) and the Honorable Louisa S. Porter (Southern District of California). While clerking in federal court, Mr. Robertson worked on a wide range of matters, including:

  • Civil rights actions under Section 1983
  • Habeas corpus petitions
  • Personal injury and unlawful discrimination cases

Following his judicial clerkships, Mr. Robertson established a private practice for civil rights litigation. His passion for fighting against police brutality and defending those persons wrongfully convicted has resulted in recent victories, including at the California Supreme Court.  Regardless of the outcome, however, Mr. Robertson aspires to fulfill the professional, ethical, and human goal described by Mr. Clarence Darrow:

When I entered the practice of my profession years ago I determined that there never should be a case, however unpopular or whatever the feeling, that I would refuse to do my duty and defend that case; and I can honestly say that I have kept the faith; that I have never turned my back upon any defendant, no matter what the charge; when the cry is the loudest the defendant needs the lawyer most; when every man has turned against him the law provides that he should have a lawyer, one who can not only be his lawyer but his friend, and I have done that.

— Clarence Darrow, in Clarence Darrow for the Defense (1941)
